Rent a bicycle in Bagan, Myanmar
Bagan is an ancient city of thousands temples, stupas and pagodas. Considering the amount of the sites you can visit it seems to be a good idea to rent a motorbike or of e-scooter . Well, not the case of Bagan. It is fully enough to rent a bicycle. Read more why.
When visiting Bagan, people usually stay in Nyaung-U or New Bagan. Both cities are some 5 km from Old Bagan – the archaeological zone where you will find all the temples. Too far for walking. Anyway, it’s nearly impossible to visit all the 2200 pagodas and temples during one visit, but it would be a quite boring tour. By walking you won’t make it very far as the sights are spread out.
In Bagan there is no possibility to rent a small motorbike. It is possible in other cities, or even to cruise Myanmar on motorcycle, but you will need a lot of money for rentals and permits. You can google it. In Bagan is possible to rent e-scooters or bicycles. The price of bicycle is 1500 kyats, the e-bike starts at 7000 kyats.
The comparison of the rent
If you read our article on how to avoid the tourist scam of entrance fee to Bagan you can understand we headed for the cheapest possible solution even in case of transport and accommodation.
We stayed in Nyaung-U in Jasmine Villa Guesthouse for 4 days and all what we wanted to see we were able to do with bikes. Including sunsets and sunrises at different places. The truth is that you have to choose carefully because the bikes are often in rough state, but there are plenty of rentals, so you have the choice.
We were thinking about renting the e-scooter to go to Mt. Popa. The guy in rental shop explained us that it is too far for the e-scooter. For one battery charge it can make some 70 km, which is much less than what Mt. Popa needs 🙁
